Censorship through ISPA takedown request.

I’ve written about this stealthy attempt at censorship before, which the GroundUp website has kindly published.
I think there’s a more general discussion that needs to be held.

The ISPA provides, through it’s code of conduct, a process for its members to take action against “Unlawful content and activity”. “There is no general obligation on any ISPA member to monitor services provided to customers, but a member is obliged to take appropriate action where it becomes aware of any unlawful content or conduct.”

USN has posted a response to their Website which states the following (my response follows):

USN would like to state the allegations made in the article posted on www.camcheck.co.za are categorically unsubstantiated and defamatory. This site is renowned for the author’s malicious views, and his personal vendettas against nutrition brands, and other companies who conduct business outside of the ethical medicines arena.

USN ‘Carb binder’ – the scam continues

In a previous complaint to the ASA, the claims made for USN Carb binder was questioned and argued to be false. USN claimed for the product:

Starch Intake Inhibitor
RAPID WEIGHT CONTROL
WEIGHT CONTROL/ CARB BINDER
We argued that there is no evidence to support these claims for this product, which has white kidney bean as its active constituent. Remember: USN first sold this product as USN Carb Blocker but changed the name to Carb Binder when the ASA ruled against the claims (including the name).
